Mixed border

The mixed border is a typically English garden element, but with the right measures we can take it anywhere in the world.

This border, which I describe as ‘Mediterranean’, has been designed with the agricultural context and the rustic but prestigious style of the manor house in mind.

This is an extremely complex border from a design point of view owing to a constantly changing exposure, a particularly clay-based soil and one of the lowest annual rainfall levels in Italy.

The use of an irrigation system is thus compulsory (unlike all my other gardens) in order to recreate that effect of abundance and let the colours of the flowers and leaves shine through all year round.

As the area is almost always in the shade, the use of herbaceous plants allowed me to create a unique yet diverse thread.
